Citrus Perfume

A lemon is technically a fruit, and perfumers still separate the two families, because they behave in opposite ways. Citrus notes are sharp, sour at the edges and volatile. Fruity notes, berry, peach, apple, lychee, are rounder, sweeter and last considerably longer. If you like the brightness but find citrus disappears too quickly, what you actually want is a fruity opening rather than a citrus one.

Bergamot is the most used top note in perfumery and most people have never knowingly smelled it alone. If you have had Earl Grey tea, you have tasted it: bright and lemony, but with a genuine floral quality underneath and a bitter green edge that no other citrus has.

That floral undertone is why perfumers rely on it. Most citrus notes evaporate and leave a gap before the heart arrives. Bergamot hands over smoothly, which is why it opens gourmands and orientals as often as it opens fresh fragrances.

Be realistic first: a pure citrus cologne will not last eight hours anywhere, and in a Delhi May it can be gone in five minutes. That is physics, not a fault in the fragrance.

What works is a citrus opening over a woody or green base, so the brightness reads at the start and the structure carries the day. Three sprays rather than two, on exposed skin, and one on a collar. Citrus is also the safest category for a packed metro or a shared cabin, because it smells like being clean rather than like wearing perfume.
